Layout Rough

Winsor & Newton Artist Watercolour, Derwent Onyx Pencil, Seawhite Square Sketchbook

I’ve been dragooned, in a friendly sort of way, into painting some scenery cloths for a local amateur drama society.

As part of the process, I’ve been doing these small watercolours as layout roughs for them (trying to get an idea of how the elements should work in the space befofre transferring to the cloths).  This is a notable one, I suppose, as most of the materials used were completely new to me (hence, probably, the large contrast in the washes – I’m still learning how they dry on paper at the moment).

I’ve also used waterbrushes for the first time here, hoping that their portability will remove at least one barrier to just sitting down and painting. (If anyone’s interested, I have the Zig Kuretake ones – a Large and a Detailer were used for this painting).
